Session description

Write an original standards-based song for your students during this session. By creating original music in minutes without picking up an instrument or a paintbrush, we empower students to create original scores to explain challenging academic concepts and to represent a specific artwork or literature.

Purpose & objective

Create an original musical composition with me… live, in real time… utilizing GarageBand! Participants will practice recording analog and software instruments, and will integrate music into the common core with writing an original song.

By the end of the session, participants will have an mp3 of our original collaborative song. The session isn’t just about HOW to write a song with a group, it’s about WRITING a song in real time with a group.

Write songs with students in GarageBand. Integrate music into the common core with songwriting, music theory, and creativity. In this session, participants compose music for a variety of cross-curricular purposes: video soundtracks, song parodies, song form, algebra (patterning), and original compositions.

Outline

Part One
Introduction to GarageBand on macOS (5 min)
• Loops
• Recording analog and software instruments

Part Two
Write and record an original song together in GarageBand. (45 min)
1. Select theme for song by selecting a Common Core standard.
2. Collaboratively compose lyrics using Google Docs.
3. Choose a key, tempo, and song form.
4. Select instrumentation.
5. Browse, preview, and add GarageBand loops into song timeline.
6. Record original tracks as needed (vocal melody, keyboards, bass guitar, etc.). Participants will record tracks.
7. Record vocals.
8. Upload to Google Drive to share!

During this session, we are writing an actual song together. I'll be facilitating participant interaction... we'll vote to build consensus for choices like instrumentation, we'll use Chat (in remote session) to brainstorm ideas for choices like content area standard, we'll use a Google Doc editable by all for lyric writing. This session truly cannot happen unless all participants are fully engaged.
