A Director of R&D and technology in a Tel-Aviv public high school, Or-Tal develops new methodologies incorporating innovation, technology and creativity into teaching. She teaches English as a foreign language to grades 7-9, from special Ed to gifted students. Recently developed a new high school major, social-technological entrepreneurship, which would open September 2023. With a background in journalism, and two startups, Or-Tal founded a couple of Facebook and meetup groups to bring together educators and high tech entrepreneurs. She has been an active figure in the Tel-Aviv tech entrepreneurs and game development communities, and several international educators networks.

Session description

Discover how, in a new public school in Tel-Aviv where classes are crowded, we teach ESL and math with no level grouping or tracking. We embrace a diversity of backgrounds and abilities, use multiple textbooks in one classroom, simple technologies, one optional booster lesson and focus on skills.

Purpose & objective

The purpose of this presentation is to make the no-tracking method known, so that more schools could use it. Tracking, or level-grouping, is controversial for years. But here, with minimal assistance by technology, and some out of the box thinking, we were able to develop and deploy a method that allows us to personalize the teaching in a diversified class, rather than try to place students in a homogeneous class, and teach in a unified way.
Sample lesson plans are included in the presentation, as well as data showing the success in the EFL classes.

Outline

Description of the background of the school, as well as the limitation in the Israel education system would lead to the story of the development of the no-tracking method. The "how to" shown, lesson plans would be presented and there will be time left for Q&A.
I intend to include video testimonies by students explaining their point of view.
