The purpose of this presentation is to introduce a classroom project that was created by English Language Learners in the primary grades to an audience of educators that are interested in learning more about using educational technology in the classroom to empower learners to express themselves and demonstrate learning in alternative and authentic ways. This project helps students and educators build a solid foundation for using educational technology throughout the entire school year, that can then be used in any academic setting where it is needed. The educational challenge is that many teachers are hesitant to integrate educational technology tools into their practice. This project introduces them to educational technology with a project that they can replicate in any part at their own pace. The technology intervention tools that are used are Google For EDU, Flip (formerly Flipgrid), and Epic books. The instructional models include starting the project with a student driven question, building upon that question using technology, and supporting student learning through the use of mixed media to help them gain the understanding of using technology to learn in the classroom. The project is broken down into multiple segments that explain the rationale behind the layered approach of teaching educational technology to students, while at the same time creating a project that is genuine to the students. The evidence of success comes in the form of student videos captured on Microsoft Flip that document their oral presentation and create a living example of the power of oral language development for English Language Learners from a diverse background. Teachers will walk away feeling more confident about being able to try using Google Sheets, Google Slides, Epic Books with students to create a project of their own choosing, and walk away knowing the impact that Microsoft Flip can have on amplifying student voice in the classroom.
