Carla Jefferson, Darlington County School District

Carla M. Jefferson is the principal of the Darlington County Virtual Academy in the Darlington County School District in South Carolina. An educator for 24 years, she’s held roles as a classroom teacher, curriculum facilitator and district-level administrator. She believes that when technology is effectively integrated into a rigorous curriculum, it can transform the academic experiences of all learners. Jefferson’s motto, “Why Not Darlington?” was inspired by a colleague and motivates her to fight for digital equity, not only for the children of Darlington County, but for children everywhere. Jefferson is an Apple Distinguished Educator, Google Certified Educator/Trainer/Innovator, PBS Lead Digital Innovator, a frequent ISTE presenter and a 2020 ISTE conference Featured Voice. Her work has been highlighted in several publications, including ISTE’s Empowered Learner, Tech & Learning Magazine and District Administrator. She has served on the ISTE Digital Equity PLN Leadership Team, was a member of the South Carolina ASCD board, and was the 2019-2020 chair of the South Carolina Association of School Administrators (SCASA) Instructional Technology Roundtable. Jefferson is currently an ISTE board member, a member of the Google's Equity Board and a member of the South Carolina Department of Education/Richland County School District Two District Data Governance Group.
