Participants will explore the templates and resources used to develop online courses available at the online Faculty Support Center. Templates include a Finding Materials Worksheet, Learning Experience Designer Outline, Learning Experience Designer Tool, Course Grading Worksheet and Credit Hour Analysis.

Proposal summary

Purpose & objective

The purpose of this session is to present a set of course design tools and to demonstrate their use through a collaborative course design exercise.

Outline

• Introduction of presenters – 2 minutes
• All participants will go to Faculty Support Center | Presentations to gain access to session materials - http://www.facultysupport.com/presentations.html. – 2 minutes
• All participants will complete opening survey in Survey Monkey to determine Course Type, Grade Level, and Subject Area for course design – 3 minutes
• As a group, we will brainstorm 3 Big Ideas for the course using a shared Word document – 4 minutes
• All participants will use the Finding Materials Worksheet as a guide to identify potential material to include in the course and will document them in shared Word document – 6 minutes
• Learning Experience Designer Outline will be described – 3 minutes
• As a group, we will complete the Learning Experience Designer Outline together. Some participants will be tasked with writing outcomes. Some participants will be tasked with incorporating the materials found in the previous step. Some participants will be asked to use Learning Experience Designer tool to suggest possible learning activities. – 27 minutes
• The primary presenter will incorporate defined activities from previous step into Course Grades Worksheet – 5 minutes
• The primary presenter will incorporate information from previous steps into Credit Hour Analysis – 5 minutes

Leah Brown, Washburn University

Leah Brown is a graduate of Washburn University and began her career as an Admissions Counselor in 2014. She transitioned to the role of Associate Director of Online Admissions in 2017 and focused on recruiting alongside faculty of Washburn's School of Nursing. Leah currently serves as the Director of Online Student Services and provides support to students and faculty in many different areas of technology.

Dr. Linda Merillat, Washburn University

Dr. Merillat's experience and skills represent a union between technology, education, and interaction design. In the course of her career she has played many different roles: programmer, systems analyst, business analyst, interaction designer, program manager, project manager, consultant, trainer, educator, instructional designer, researcher, author, and entrepreneur. The common thread running throughout has always been the challenge of how to successfully use and integrate the latest technology into an organization. She currently holds the position of Lecturer/Instructional Designer with the School of Nursing at Washburn University in Topeka, KS.
