Through this immersive hands-on experience, the Community-Centered Design Workshop will highlight how educators can bridge the gap between out-of-context academic learning in the classroom and the real-world application of these skills for a deeper and more authentic educational experience.

Proposal summary

Purpose & objective

This workshop will illuminate how project-based learning experiences will transform the learning experience for students through highly engaging, hands-on authentic educational experiences with ties to the challenges we see in the world outside of the classroom. Participants will have access to lessons and curriculum used in the presentation and leave this program inspired and prepared to implement these tools in the class.
The lesson plans, curriculum, and video tutorials/resources used in this workshop will be available for download and view from the 3duxdesign open-source digital platform.

Outline

This presentation will begin with an introduction to the challenge (to build a tiny house village based on the the local materials, geography, climate and cultural diversity within particular communities) - 5 minutes

There will be a group discussion on available research tools followed by ideation, design process and rapid prototyping - 30-35 minutes

There will be a group presentation and discussion of how projects like this can be implemented in the classroom and adapted to address real world challenges children face in their own local community. 15-20 minutes

Marci Klein M.D. is an NYU trained clinical and academic pediatrician with over 20 years experience in early childhood development, education and social/emotional heath. She transitioned into education 4 years ago, joining her two teen children, the original founders of 3DuxDesign cardboard modeling system after seeing the incredible response from both educators and students, Dr. Klein now creates a wide range project-based learning resources for children learning both in the classroom and at home. Her curriculum focuses on real-world problem solving, blending the arts with traditional STEM education to inspire the next generation of innovators.
