This session focuses on a creative way to promote reading with high school students. Hear how we created a physical space where everyone is able to share a personal experience they had while reading a specific book using Flipgrid.

Audience: Library media specialists
Skill level: Beginner
Attendee devices: Devices required
Attendee device specification: Smartphone: Android, iOS, Windows
Laptop: Chromebook, Mac, PC
Tablet: Android, iOS, Windows
Participant accounts, software and other materials: For now it'll be the Flipgrid link, however we are looking forward on making a complete and complex website to present all of the experience in the BOOKFLIX. The Flipgrid link is managed by my teacher Mrs. Dinorah Diaz and it requires having the school email. However, I am sure this can be modified so that the project is more open and flexible just as how we mentioned before.

Proposal summary

Purpose & objective

The purpose of the project is to promote the reading habit and make it fun for teenagers. It has happened that young people are not open minded to reading due to a bad experience with a book or with school. We want to make them start from 0 and help them find reading interest of them. The skill that is going to be practiced is reading, and more specifically reading comprehension. The challenge now is to make them feel comfortable grabbing a book and knowing that at first they might not like it, which doesn't mean that they will not love at all books. We are looking forward on making a website in which we can start being more flexible with people who are still in virtual reality so that they can still experience the reality of reading. The platform that is currently used is Flipgrid and Excel, but we are still polishing the idea.

3. Moreover, I want to share a personal experience. I love seeing a comfortable place so that I can read with all liberty and quietly. It has helped me to get inspired on what I read, and to identify what I like. I think it is something that teenagers are missing nowadays, mostly because they spend time in their phone (social media or games).
