Proposal summary

Purpose & objective

A core part of my school library program is focusing on STEAM. This focus allows me to integrate literature with science, technology, engineering, art, and math into a seamless learning experience for the faculty, staff, and students. As time went on, I decided to add another component to my library program - SEL (social-emotional learning). Students need art to express themselves and forget their worries about the stress of their school and home lives. Our students in the area have faced a myriad of roadblocks recently. Some of our families have lost their jobs and a reliable source of income due to the long-lasting economic impact of Covid-19. Furthermore, some of my students came to me that some of their closest family members, unfortunately, passed away due to health complications. As our students continued to persevere, they were faced with another roadblock - the aftermath of the Texas Winter Storm, Uri, in February 2021. Many of our students suffered damages to their homes and some were displaced. This is why I now hold dear to my heart the power of SEL. I did bits and pieces throughout my years in education, but more so than ever, making sure that all students are emotionally well-adjusted and ready to tackle on life’s challenges is one of the top priorities.

Outline

1. Discussing what is the connection between SEL & literature? (5 min)
2. Dissecting a sample SEL lesson (10 min)
3. Examining next steps forward, including how to work with a limited budget (5 min)
