Google, Amazon (Alexa/Echo), and STEM Coalition provide free tools, interactives, projects and virtual field trips for teaching computer science and artificial intelligence. Modules work in CS class but are intended for classes like social studies English, etc. Fun, diverse, free! Be the one to expose students to this essential knowledge.

Proposal summary

Purpose & objective

The objectives are for participants to leave with 1) experience with artificial intelligence in a curriculum-centered environment 2) understand future impact and presence of artificial intelligence in working professions and in daily life 3) gain models and lessons for using artificial intelligence in the non-computer science classroom 4) to be familiar with the grant structure possible for the (modest) funds needed to fund AI for the typical classroom.
Also, markers for success in classrooms, especially emphasizing use for curriculum and projects. Also, strategies for teaching independence from AI (DYI activities)--something that will become more important. The work being doing in districts in Maryland and California will be shown. Some of these programs began in the some years ago. All resources are free, and designed to engage students. Success will be evidenced by familiarity with web-based and machine-based learning, as determined by an exit Kahoot.

Outline

1. 10 minutes: Overview of what Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Machine Learning (ML) are, how is used now, and what the near future will look like.
2. 5 minutes:Participants craft a definition of AI, ML, and computer science
3. 15 minutes: Demonstration of free sites to teach machine learning
and artificial intelligence to students, including the 'student activation' modules for computer science and AI careers provided by the multi-corporation STEM Coalition. Participant interaction on sites.
4. 5 minutes: Advantages setting up programmable, inexpensive hardware in classrooms (multi-language support, essay modules).
5. 10 minutes Demonstration of programming via blueprint templates for the AI home devices using Amazon's AI hardware (Alexa)
6. 10 minutes: Strategies shared for classroom use. Sharing districts now offering programs . How to integrate AI into traditional classroom activities and assignments. Including how to turn off AI.
7. 5 minutes:Permission forms provided and discussion of thorny issues.
8. Q&A with time remaining.

Hall Davidson, Discovery Education

Hall Davidson served education for 40 years. In the classroom, he taught on an Emmy-winning mathematics series, while performing improv in Los Angeles. An administrator, he led a county media technology consortium serving 400,000 students. He served on the boards of ISTE, California-affiliate CUE, and state task forces, and students through the nation’s oldest student media festival. He is president of an educational media foundation serving a million students. He has keynoted conferences internationally. He currently serves as Senior Director of Global Learning Initiatives for Discovery Education, serving more than half the schools in the US and countries on four continents.
