In this session, come learn more about how to use Tik Tok for education. You will spend time playing and learning in the app to better understand the algorithm, how to create short-form video and how to find educators you can learn from and follow on the app.

Proposal summary

Purpose & objective

This objective of this session is to give educators a chance to better understand the most popular social media platform - and how its power and popularity might be harnessed for education. This session will give teachers an opportunity to play, create and better understand how the algorithm can lead them to the really creative personal PD experiences.

Teachers will leave with educators to follow, ideas for using in the classroom and the ability to create on their own if they desire. Teachers will create an ISTE Tik Tok to share out if they want - or watch other examples coming from the Lab.

Outline

Explore:
Intro to Tik Tok the app by looking at example educator videos and ways to learn on Tik Tok. Together we will deconstruct one or two examples to uncover why they catch our attention.

Discover: Groups will take 5 minutes to find and share their favorite examples - using the discover features of Tik Tok

Explain:
The creation tools of Tik Tok will be explained enough so that educators can successfully

Apply
Playtime: through Challenge--based learning educators will work alone or together to create an ISTE focused Tik Tok. They will learn how to create a 7-15 second video with text, sticker, green-screen affects and more.

Supporting research

This session will be based around ideas of Making Student Thinking Visible by both Ron Richard and Visible Thinking by John Hattie. It will include a look at creating authentic task from Understanding By Design by Grant Wiggens and Jay McTighe. It will look at the constructs of cognitive learning theory found in Make it Stick by Peter Brown. All concepts part of the book are also included The Chromebook Infused Classroom authored and researched by the presenter.
